How M199S Differs from S398-2
Both watches use the Seagull ST1908 with chronograph and moonphase. The distinction is the dial:
M199S (this page): Roman numeral dial option — the “Roma” variant uses Roman numerals as hour markers rather than applied batons or Arabic numerals. The Roman numeral layout creates a more formally traditional character. Available in Roma, white and black dials across silver and rose gold cases.
S398-2: Plain coloured dials — dark blue, salmon and white without Roman numerals. More contemporary and colour-expressive. The salmon dial is exclusive to the S398-2.
Choose M199S for Roman numerals and the rose gold option. Choose S398-2 for the dark blue or salmon dial.
Seagull ST1908 — 29 Jewels, Column-Wheel, Integrated
The ST1908 descends from the Swiss Venus 175 chronograph architecture of the mid-20th century — an integrated column-wheel chronograph design that Seagull has developed into a contemporary caliber with improved specifications and finishing.
29 jewels: A high jewel count for this movement tier — synthetic ruby bearings at gear train pivot points throughout, reducing friction comprehensively.
Column-wheel: Controls the start/stop and reset functions with precise, tactile engagement.
45-hour power reserve: More than most hand-wound chronographs in this category — allows extended off-wrist periods without stopping.
Integrated architecture: Chronograph and moonphase functions built into a single movement design rather than added as a module on top of a base movement. This keeps the 14.5mm total case height slim for a movement with this complication count.
Movement Finishing — Côtes de Genève and Geneva Stripes

Côtes de Genève (Geneva stripes): Parallel straight-line engravings applied to the movement bridges — a decorative finishing technique associated with high-grade Swiss watchmaking. The parallel lines create a visual rhythm across the bridge surfaces and catch light differently at each viewing angle.
Gold-tone bridges: The movement bridges use gold-tone finishing against which the blued screws contrast sharply.
Heat-blued screws: Screws treated by controlled heating to produce a blue oxide layer — both a protective treatment and a finishing detail. The blue colour is achieved by the same oxidation chemistry as blued sword blades and gun barrels.

Moonphase Setting Warning
Do not operate the moonphase quick-set between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM. The calendar mechanism is mid-advance during these hours and operating the quick-set risks gear damage. Adjust the moonphase display during daytime hours only.
Winding the ST1908
Turn the crown clockwise to wind. The mainspring approaches full tension after approximately 25–30 half-turns — resistance increases as the spring fills. Do not force the crown past full tension. For daily wear, wind once per day at a consistent time. The 45-hour power reserve allows one missed day without stopping.
