Product Description

Sugess S423 Chrono Heritage Watch — Seagull ST1901 Gold Swan Neck, Column Wheel, 42mm

The Sugess Chrono Heritage S423 is a 42mm manual-winding chronograph powered by the genuine Seagull ST1901 movement in its Gold Swan Neck specification — Sugess’s upgraded variant featuring a polished gold-tone swan neck spring regulator and column wheel chronograph control. The S423 is one of the most widely discussed mechanical chronographs at this price level in online watch communities, consistently cited for delivering a genuine column wheel, hand-wound, exhibition caseback chronograph experience at a fraction of the cost of Swiss equivalents.

Specifications confirmed from Sugess’s own product pages: 42mm case, 11.5mm thick (13mm with sapphire), 51mm lug-to-lug, genuine Seagull ST1901 Gold Swan Neck, 21 jewels, 21,600 vph, 45-hour power reserve, column wheel chronograph, blue steel screws, exhibition caseback, 50m water resistance.

Available at Jewelry Addicts in rose gold/blue dial and blue dial configurations on Italian leather strap.

Variants — Rose Gold/Blue and Blue Dial

Rose gold / blue dial (RG Blue): A two-tone configuration — rose gold-tone case hardware and applied indices against a deep blue dial. The warm rose gold complements the blue dial in a combination associated with high-end dress-sport chronographs. The rose gold swan neck spring is visible through the exhibition caseback in matching tone. This is the more formally elegant of the two configurations.

Blue dial / steel case (Blue L): A clean blue dial with steel case hardware throughout. The blue dial against stainless steel creates a sportier, more contemporary character. The steel case on blue is the more versatile daily-wear option — transitions easily between casual and business contexts.

Both variants carry the same movement, specifications and finishing details — the difference is exclusively in case tone and visual character.

The Seagull ST1901 — Movement History and Specification

The ST1901 is manufactured by Tianjin Seagull Watch Group and is based on the Venus 175 chronograph movement — a Swiss design originally produced in the 1940s that was acquired by China and put into production at Tianjin in the 1960s for military and commercial use. It was initially a Swiss design sold to the Chinese military in the 1960s and has since been incorporated into commercial watches. The result is a movement with genuine European technical DNA that has been in continuous Chinese manufacture for over six decades.

Key specifications:

  • Manual winding — crown only, no automatic rotor
  • 21 jewels
  • 21,600 vph (3Hz)
  • 45-hour power reserve at full wind
  • Column wheel chronograph control
  • 30-minute elapsed time counter at 3 o’clock
  • 12-hour indicator at 9 o’clock
  • Running seconds at 9 o’clock (shared register with 12-hour indicator)

The column wheel is the critical specification. Most entry-level chronograph movements use a cam or lever system to control the start/stop/reset functions — these are cheaper to produce but result in a less precise, sometimes gritty pusher action. A column wheel uses a rotating ratchet wheel with raised pillars to control the same functions with more precise, positive engagement. The tactile result is a noticeably cleaner pusher click on start and stop — the top pusher has a firm, reassuring click when starting the chronograph.

The Gold Swan Neck Spring

The swan neck spring is a specific regulator design used to hold the movement’s regulating index (which controls the beat rate and thus accuracy) in precise position. A standard regulator uses a simple spring that can move slightly under vibration, causing minor accuracy variation. A swan neck spring — an elegantly curved, S-shaped flat spring — applies more consistent pressure to the index, holding it more firmly in position. The result is improved regulation stability.

Sugess’s Gold Swan Neck version uses a polished gold-tone swan neck spring — visible through the exhibition caseback as one of the most visually striking elements of the movement display. The gold tone against the nickel-plated movement bridges and the blue steel screws creates a three-colour palette that makes the ST1901 in this specification one of the most visually compelling movements visible through a caseback at this price level.

The gold swan neck is not merely decorative — it is a genuine finishing upgrade on top of the functional swan neck architecture.

Blue Steel Screws

The blue steel screws visible throughout the S423’s movement are produced by heat-bluing — controlled heating of steel screws to approximately 290–300°C until the surface oxide layer reaches the thickness that produces a deep, uniform blue colour. This is a permanent colour treatment that cannot chip or flake. Blue steel screws are associated with high-end Swiss movement finishing and are genuinely unusual in Chinese movements at this price point.

The contrast between the gold swan neck, blue steel screws and the nickel movement bridges creates the visual depth that makes the ST1901 exhibition so striking through the caseback.

Column Wheel Chronograph — Operation

The S423’s chronograph functions are controlled by two pushers flanking the push/pull crown:

Top pusher (2 o’clock): start and stop the chronograph. The column wheel engagement produces a firm, clean click on both start and stop — the tactile feedback distinguishes this clearly from cam-controlled chronographs.

Bottom pusher (4 o’clock): reset the elapsed time counters to zero. The reset produces a slightly different feel from the start/stop — normal for the column wheel architecture.

Crown operation: the crown is push/pull rather than screw-down. Pull to position 1 to set the time. The push/pull crown is appropriate for a manual-winding watch where frequent crown interaction for daily winding requires easy access — a screw-down crown would make daily winding significantly more inconvenient.

Winding: turn the crown clockwise to wind. The S423 requires daily winding from a 45-hour fully-wound state. With regular daily wear the movement should maintain charge through wrist motion alone, but the ST1901’s manual-wind architecture means active winding via the crown is occasionally necessary.

Ceramic Bezel with Tachymeter Scale

The ceramic bezel carries a tachymeter scale — a speed-over-distance calculation scale used in conjunction with the chronograph function. To use: start the chronograph as you pass a known distance marker, stop it after one unit of distance (one mile or one kilometre), and read the speed directly from the tachymeter scale at the elapsed seconds position. The ceramic bezel material is highly scratch-resistant — significantly harder than the aluminium bezels common on most sport watches — and will retain the tachymeter markings with long-term legibility.

Exhibition Caseback and Dial Side View

The sapphire exhibition caseback presents the ST1901 movement from the reverse: the gold swan neck spring, blue steel screws, column wheel and the decorated bridges are visible simultaneously. This is a movement that warrants exhibition — the finishing combination at this price is exceptional.

The domed sapphire crystal on the front creates a slight magnification effect over the dial. There is no AR coating on the sapphire crystal, which ties in with the retro styling Sugess have opted for — the contrast between the hands and the watch face makes it easy enough to tell the time regardless. The absence of AR is consistent with the vintage aviation instrument character of the design.

Sugess as a Brand

Sugess is a Chinese watch brand founded in 2010, closely associated with the Seestern group of brands. They focus on Seagull movement-powered watches — their product range is built almost entirely around Seagull calibers, which they specify and finish to a higher standard than generic OEM applications. The S423 is part of their Chrono Heritage series — the mechanically serious chronograph line in their range.

Who Is the Sugess S423 For?

The S423 is built for:

  • Buyers who want a genuine column wheel mechanical chronograph with an exhibition caseback at an accessible price — this specification in Swiss manufacture typically costs $2,000+
  • Collectors drawn to the Seagull ST1901’s Swiss-origin movement history and the gold swan neck visual spectacle through the caseback
  • Manual-winding enthusiasts who want the daily crown engagement as part of ownership
  • Blue dial watch buyers who want a chronograph with genuine mechanical depth rather than a quartz or meca-quartz alternative

Manual winding requirement: the ST1901 has no automatic rotor. It requires daily winding. If this is incompatible with your wear habits, consider the Farasute Trackmaster I or Farasute Trackmaster II — both are full automatic mechanical chronographs.

How It Compares

vs. Sugess S457 Panda Dial — The S457 is the panda dial variant in the same Chrono Heritage series — same ST1901 movement in a different dial configuration. If you want the panda rather than blue dial, the S457 is the direct comparison.

vs. Sugess S438 Pilot Chronograph — The S438 uses the ST1906 in a pilot watch case — a different movement architecture and case design. The S423 is the dress-sport option; the S438 is the aviation-instrument alternative.

vs. Farasute Trackmaster I — The Trackmaster I is a fully automatic mechanical chronograph at 39mm. The S423 requires manual winding; the Trackmaster I does not. The S423 wins on exhibition caseback visual quality and movement history; the Trackmaster I wins on convenience.

vs. Sugess S418 Automatic Chronograph — The S418 adds automatic winding to a Sugess chronograph. If the manual winding of the S423 is a concern, the S418 is the automatic alternative within the Sugess range.

vs. Baltany S205034 — The Baltany S205034 uses the Seiko VK64 meca-quartz. The S423 is the fully mechanical alternative — genuine column wheel movement at a higher price vs meca-quartz accuracy at lower price.
