Black dial (branded): A classic black chronograph face with applied luminous markers, Phylida branding at 12 o’clock, contrasting subdial registers and the central chronograph seconds hand. The tachymeter scale runs around the outer dial perimeter. The black dial with green lume is consistent with the vintage racing chronograph aesthetic the SP-31 references.
Sterile dial: The same layout with all brand text removed. The sterile dial is cleaner and more symmetrical — without the brand name at 12 the subdials and markers read as a balanced, anonymous racing chronograph. For buyers who prefer no brand text, or who want the military-specification clean-face aesthetic, the sterile option is the correct choice.
The Seagull ST-19 is one of the most discussed movements in the affordable mechanical chronograph category and is manufactured by the Tianjin Seagull Watch Group. Its significance to enthusiasts comes from its architecture:
Column-wheel: The chronograph mechanism uses a column wheel — a small cylindrical ratchet wheel with vertical pillars that control the chronograph levers. Column-wheel chronographs provide a more precise and tactile pusher action than cam-operated (lever) chronograph alternatives. The start/stop and reset functions engage with a cleaner, more satisfying feel. In high-end Swiss chronographs, column-wheel architecture is associated with better consistency and longevity of the chronograph mechanism. The ST-19 brings this architecture to a price point where column-wheel chronographs are otherwise unavailable.
Hand-winding only: the ST-19 has no automatic rotor. The watch must be wound via the crown — typically once per day for regular wearers. The absence of a rotor allows the movement to be slimmer and the exhibition caseback to present a cleaner view of the chronograph architecture without an oscillating weight obscuring the mechanism.
Three-register layout: small seconds at 9 o’clock, 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock, hour counter at 6 o’clock. The three registers allow elapsed time measurement up to 12 hours.
The “top-hat” sapphire crystal has a flat top surface with steeply curved sides — the profile resembles a top hat in cross-section. This creates a distinctive visual effect: the crystal catches light at the curved edges and creates a bright ring at the boundary between the flat face and the curved sides. The dome is more pronounced than a standard domed crystal and gives the SP-31 a strong vintage character consistent with the racing chronograph aesthetic.
The screw-in sapphire caseback presents the ST-19 architecture from the rear — the column wheel, chronograph levers, gear train, bridges and jewels are all visible in operation. On a hand-wound chronograph the exhibition caseback is the complementary display to the dial: the dial shows the time and chronograph registers; the caseback shows the mechanism that drives them. When the chronograph is running the lever action is visible through the caseback.
The SP-31 uses green Super-LumiNova on the applied hour markers and hands — a warm green tone that is consistent with the vintage racing chronograph aesthetic. Green lume references the radium and tritium compounds used on professional sport watches before the introduction of modern non-radioactive lume formulations. In darkness the green glow is warm and characterful rather than the bright blue-white of BGW9.
The ST-19 requires daily winding — the crown is rotated clockwise approximately 30–40 half-turns to bring the mainspring to full tension. For enthusiasts the daily winding ritual is part of ownership — a brief physical engagement with the mechanical object that automatic watches eliminate. For buyers who want convenience above all, the Farasute Trackmaster I is the automatic mechanical chronograph alternative in the range.
You have two Phylida ST-19 chronograph pages. The reverse panda uses the same ST-19 movement in a different dial configuration — a reverse panda layout (dark sub-registers on a lighter field). The SP-31 is the black dial with green lume. Choose by dial preference: classic black (SP-31) vs reverse panda layout (other model).
The SP-31 is built for:
This is not the correct choice for buyers who want automatic winding, deeper water resistance or quartz accuracy.
vs. Phylida ST-19 Reverse Panda — The reverse panda uses the same ST-19 in a different dial layout. Same movement, different aesthetic. Choose by dial preference.
vs. Farasute Trackmaster I — The Trackmaster I is a 39mm automatic mechanical chronograph — no daily winding required. The SP-31 is the hand-winding column-wheel alternative.
vs. Baltany S205034 VK64 — The Baltany S205034 uses VK64 meca-quartz for a smooth-sweeping central hand at a lower price. The SP-31 is the fully mechanical alternative for buyers who want genuine movement architecture over quartz accuracy.
