Polarized Fishing and Sports Sunglasses Guide — TR90, TAC UV400, Frame Width and Lens Tint Explained

Polarized Fishing and Sports Sunglasses Guide — TR90, TAC UV400, Frame Width and Lens Tint Explained

Polarized sunglasses for fishing, driving and outdoor sport share the same basic requirement: cut glare, protect against UV, stay comfortable on the face. The variables are frame width, lens size, nose pad construction, hinge quality and specialist lens options like night-drive yellow or gradient tints. This guide covers all of it — with every model available at Jewelry Addicts linked for direct comparison.

Polarization — What It Actually Does {#polarization}

Glare is light reflected from flat horizontal surfaces — roads, water, car bonnets, wet pavement. Reflected light aligns horizontally. A polarized lens contains a vertical filter that blocks this horizontal alignment, allowing only vertical light through. The result: surfaces stop glaring and your eyes stop squinting.

Where it matters most:

Fishing — polarization removes the mirror effect from water surfaces, allowing you to see into the water column rather than seeing a reflection of the sky. Essential for spotting fish, rocks and depth.

Driving — eliminates road surface glare and windscreen reflection. Oncoming headlight scatter is also reduced.

Cycling and hiking — wet roads, puddles and reflective road markings stop overwhelming the eye in bright conditions.

Home polarization test: Hold the glasses in front of a phone or LCD screen and rotate them 90 degrees. At certain angles the screen will darken significantly or show rainbow colours. This confirms the polarizing filter is genuine.

UV400 — The Health Protection {#uv400}

UV400 and polarization are different functions — UV400 is not the same as polarized. UV400 certification means the lens blocks wavelengths up to 400 nanometres, covering both UVA (315–400nm) and UVB (280–315nm). UVA contributes to long-term eye damage including cataracts; UVB causes acute eye surface damage in high-exposure conditions.

Important: Lens tint darkness has no relation to UV protection. A lightly tinted lens can have full UV400 certification. A dark but uncertified lens protects against brightness only, not UV radiation. Always verify UV400 is stated explicitly in the listing.

Every model at Jewelry Addicts in this range carries UV400 certification alongside the polarization.

Frame Materials {#materials}

TR90 (Plastic Titanium): A thermoplastic rubber that flexes under impact rather than snapping. Lightweight, shockproof, temperature-resistant. The standard material for performance sports sunglasses at this price point. Used in the Klay 0110, 1117, 0417, KN0616 and KN1991 models.

Polycarbonate: A stiffer plastic with high impact resistance. Slightly denser than TR90 but also highly durable. Used in the KN0910 and Clarke KN0318 models.

Difference in practice: TR90 recovers its shape after bending — useful when sunglasses are sat on, stored in pockets or caught under helmet straps. Polycarbonate resists impact better in direct-contact situations. Both are appropriate for active outdoor use.

Lens Tints — Which Colour for Which Use {#tints}

Grey / Black: Neutral colour rendering — the world looks as it should, just dimmer. The correct choice for driving, general outdoor use and any situation where colour accuracy matters. Most buyers’ default.

Brown / Amber / Coffee: Filters short-wavelength blue light, increasing contrast. Objects appear sharper and more distinct. Preferred for fishing, hiking and variable-light outdoor use where contrast helps more than colour neutrality.

Green: Balances brightness and contrast — less contrast enhancement than brown but more natural colour than grey. Good all-round outdoor option.

Blue / Ice Blue mirror: Mirror lenses reduce total light transmission and create the highly reflective surface. Good for bright sun exposure, beach and snow. The mirror is a coating on top of the base tint; the polarization filter is separate.

Yellow: Filters blue wavelengths more aggressively than amber, maximising contrast in low-light conditions — heavy cloud, fog, rain, dusk and dawn. Not suitable as a sun lens in bright conditions (insufficient brightness reduction). Specific to the 0417 (C7) and 0717 (C6) in this range.

Red / Orange mirror: High contrast and vivid visual character. More expressive than functional — suitable for bright outdoor conditions.

Gradient (brown/grey): Top-darker/bottom-lighter — the same principle as driving gradients. Useful when you need eye protection above while maintaining visibility for closer objects below.

Nose Pad Constructions {#nose-pads}

Standard plastic bridge: Integrated into the frame, fixed position, lightest construction. Most common in fashion and casual sunglasses.

Rubber nose pads: Separate soft-rubber inserts that grip the nose bridge during movement and perspiration. Prevents forward migration during active use. Present on KN0910 and 0717.

Non-slip nose pads: Soft material integrated into the nose bridge area — provides grip without separate insert construction. Present on KN0616.

Built-in nose support: As seen on the 0417 half-frame — integrated into the frame architecture.

For fishing and active outdoor use, rubber or non-slip nose pads make a meaningful difference over standard plastic bridges — sweat and sun cream both reduce grip on plain plastic.

Hinge Quality {#hinges}

Standard hinges: 3-barrel construction — adequate for most daily use.

5-barrel stainless steel hinges: More complex hinge with greater contact surface area, distributing stress across more points and lasting longer under repeated flex. Present on KN1991 Burnet XL and Clarke KN0318. The most durable hinge construction in this range.

Stainless steel hinges (3-barrel): Corrosion-resistant for water and sweat exposure. Present on KN0318.

For sunglasses used regularly near salt water, on boats or in high-sweat conditions, stainless hinges outlast chrome-plated or plastic hinges significantly.

All Models — By Use Case {#use-case}

Best for Fishing

Fishing requires polarization to cut water surface reflection, rubber nose pads to prevent slipping during active casting, and ideally a brown or amber tint for contrast into the water column.

KN0910 — 151mm, 68mm lens, rubber nose pads, Category 3 lenses. Widest frame and lens coverage in the range.

0717 — 144mm, rubber nose pads, 5-barrel stainless hinges, tortoise frame with mirror green for water contrast (C4).

KN1991 Burnet XL — 135mm, 5-barrel stainless hinges, rubber nose pads AND rubber temple covers. Camo frame options for outdoor fishing environments.

Best for Driving

Clarke KN0318 — classic square frame, stainless steel hinges, 145mm, 139mm temples (longest in range for secure fit). Patterned frame options.

0717 — 5-barrel stainless hinges, rubber nose pads, 144mm. Tea/brown lens (C6) for natural contrast driving.

Best for Night and Low-Light Driving

X-KORE 0417 — the only model in the range with a dedicated yellow night-drive lens (C7). Half-frame design, 146mm, 1.5mm TAC lens.

0717 — non-mirror tea lens (C6) for low-light contrast.

Best for Cycling
