Cook Shark Sunglasses Review 2026 Every Model Reviewed Honest Assessment

Cook Shark is a Chinese eyewear brand making polarized, photochromic and UV400 sunglasses — aluminium-magnesium frames, TAC lenses, priced between $35 and $102. They don’t make optical-grade lenses or proprietary lens technology. They make solid, lightweight, properly polarized sunglasses at a price where those specifications are harder to find.

This review covers every Cook Shark model available at Jewelry Addicts — confirmed model numbers, confirmed specifications, honest trade-offs.

What Cook Shark Does Well {#what-they-do-well}

Aluminium-magnesium frames standard. Al-Mg is lighter than standard metal, corrosion-resistant to sweat and salt air, and less prone to warping than plastic. Most Cook Shark models use it for the frame body — some also use it for the temples.

Polarization on every model. Every Cook Shark at Jewelry Addicts is polarized — the vertical filter that blocks horizontal glare from roads, water and glass is present as standard, not as an optional upgrade.

UV400 certified. Blocks wavelengths up to 400nm — covering both UVA (315–400nm) and UVB (280–315nm). UV400 and polarization are different functions. UV400 protects against long-term eye damage from ultraviolet light; polarization reduces immediate glare discomfort. You want both, and Cook Shark provides both.

Photochromic options across multiple models. Auto-tinting lenses are available on 9 of the 17 models — the photochromic + polarized combination is Cook Shark’s strongest technical offering.

Weight. The lightest confirmed models: 8793 at 21.8g, 8790 at 24.1g, A651 at 26.6g, 8034 at 27.5g, 8571 at 29.5g. For sunglasses worn all day, frame weight matters more than most buyers expect.

What to Check Before Buying {#what-to-check}

Frame width. Cook Shark models range from 130mm (8045) to 152mm (8034). A 22mm difference is substantial on the face — measure your current glasses’ frame width before ordering.

Photochromic windscreen limitation. All photochromic lenses respond slower through UV-filtering car windscreens — the auto-tinting effect is reduced when driving. The polarized function is unaffected. If driving is your primary use, a fixed-tint polarized lens is simpler.

Bridge width. Ranges from 9mm (8790) to 30mm (A571). If you have a wider nose bridge, the 9–14mm bridges will sit too close. Check bridge width against your current glasses.

Frame material conflicts. Several listings show Al-Mg in the marketing copy but reference other materials in the spec images. The 8038 retro (18g) and 8127 riding frame material are unconfirmed between Al-Mg and PC/TR. Confirm from the specific listing if material is important to you.

All Models — By Use Case {#by-use-case}

Best for Driving — Dashboard Visibility

8699 Gradient — the only Cook Shark with a dedicated gradient lens (top-darker/bottom-lighter) as a standard feature. The gradient specifically addresses the driving trade-off: dark upper lens for sky glare, lighter lower lens for dashboard and instrument visibility. 4-in-1 lens: polarized + photochromic + gradient + AR. 145mm, 68mm lens width.

8080 Classic Half-Rim — same 4-in-1 gradient lens on a classic half-rim rectangular frame rather than a sport rimless. 142mm, 68mm lens, 18mm bridge.

Best for Night Driving / Low Light

A571 Night Vision — the only Cook Shark with a dedicated yellow night vision lens. Yellow filters blue wavelengths to improve contrast in fog, rain, heavy overcast and dusk conditions. Also available in photochromic for day use. Square goggle frame, 140mm, 30mm wide bridge.

8034 Sports — yellow-green lens option also available for low-light contrast. 152mm, 70mm lens width — the widest Cook Shark.

Best for Cycling and Riding

8127 Riding — the only Cook Shark with spring-style temples and anti-skid temple covers specifically designed for helmet use and active head movement. Photochromic polarized, 140mm, 65mm lens, 45mm height.

Best for Fishing and Water

Any polarized Cook Shark reduces water surface glare. The models with the widest lens coverage provide the best protection from peripheral glare near water:

8034 Sports — 152mm, 70mm lens. Maximum coverage. 8681 Shield — ~143mm continuous single-lens shield. No gaps between lenses.

Lightest for Extended Wear

8793 Half-Frame — 21.8g confirmed Al-Mg. Photochromic polarized, 145mm, 69mm lens. 8790 Semi-Rimless — 24.1g, 142mm, 67mm lens. 8 colour options including brown. 8038 Retro Round — 18g (frame material unconfirmed), round retro, 138mm, 25mm wide bridge.

Best Pilot / Aviator

A666 Aviator — 149mm, classic double bridge, photochromic polarized, 8 lens variants, 3ATM. The widest aviator in the range. A620 Pilot — 138mm, single bridge, photochromic + polarized, adjustable silicone nose pads, alloy frame.

Best for Daily Casual Wear

2458 Classic Rectangle — 140mm, 9 lens colours, gold and gun frame options, gradient gray lens on a classic full-rim rectangle. A651 Metal Frame — 147mm full metal frame (front and temples), slim rectangular, 26.6g, simple fixed polarized.

Widest Colour Selection

8808 Pro — 11 lens variants including green and gradient gray. Spring temples, 140mm. 2458 Classic Rectangle — 9 lens variants including orange (exclusive to this model).

Lens Technology Explained {#lens-tech}

Polarized — a vertical filter permanently embedded in the lens. Blocks horizontal glare from roads, water, windscreens and wet surfaces. Works at all times regardless of tint level. Present on every Cook Shark model.

UV400 — blocks wavelengths up to 400nm including UVA and UVB. Protects against long-term eye damage from ultraviolet radiation. Different function from polarization — you need both.

Photochromic — the lens contains molecules that react to UV light, darkening outdoors and lightening indoors. The polarized filter operates simultaneously at all tint levels. Limitation: car windscreens filter UV, reducing the darkening response while driving. Available on 9 Cook Shark models.

Gradient — the lens is darker at the top and progressively lighter towards the bottom within the same lens. Useful for driving: darker upper portion reduces overhead sun glare; lighter lower portion allows dashboard and instrument visibility without removing the glasses. Available on the 8699, 8080, 8808 (gradient gray variant) and 2458 (gradient gray variant).

Anti-reflective (AR) — reduces internal lens reflections from the rear lens surface. Improves contrast in conditions where light enters from behind the wearer (tunnels, night driving with headlights behind). Present on 8699, 8080, 8127 and A571.

Yellow/Night vision — yellow lenses filter blue wavelengths to improve contrast in low-light scattering conditions: fog, rain, heavy overcast, dusk and dawn. Not a night driving lens in complete darkness. Available on A571 (dedicated) and 8034/8571 (as colour variants).

Polarization Test

Rotate the glasses while looking at a phone or LCD screen. The screen will dim or show rainbow colours at certain angles if the polarization filter is genuine. This is a basic field test — not laboratory verification — but it confirms the filter is present.

Cook Shark vs Other Brands {#comparison}

Cook Shark occupies a specific position — below dedicated performance optical brands (Oakley, Maui Jim) and above generic marketplace sunglasses with printed “UV400” labels and no actual certification.

vs. Oakley: Oakley’s Prizm lens technology provides environment-specific lens optimisation (e.g. trail running, snow, road cycling) that Cook Shark does not match. Oakley frames also use proprietary materials (O-Matter, Unobtainium) engineered for specific sports use. Cook Shark costs a fraction of Oakley’s price and covers the needs of most buyers who want polarized UV400 sunglasses for everyday driving, fishing and general outdoor use. If you are specifically training for competitive cycling, skiing or trail running at high intensity, Oakley’s specialised lens engineering is worth the premium. For everything else, Cook Shark does the job.

vs. standard marketplace polarized sunglasses: The distinguishing factors are the Al-Mg frame quality, confirmed UV400 certification, and the range of specific-purpose lens technologies (gradient, night vision, photochromic + polarized combinations) that generic marketplace sunglasses don’t offer.

Buyer’s Checklist {#checklist}

Before ordering:

  • What is my current frame width? Compare against the frame width table above.
  • What is my bridge width? Check bridge specs if you have a wider or narrower nose bridge.
  • Do I need photochromic? If primarily driving, fixed-tint polarized is simpler.
  • Do I need gradient? If dashboard visibility during bright daytime driving is a priority, choose 8699 or 8080.
  • Do I need night vision? A571 is the dedicated option.
  • Do I need cycling/riding specific fit? 8127 with spring anti-skid temples.
  • Do I need maximum lens coverage? 8034 at 152mm / 70mm lens, or 8681 shield.
  • What is my weight preference? 8793 (21.8g), 8790 (24.1g), 8038 (18g) for minimum weight.
