Case and Dimensions

39.5mm diameter with a 46mm lug-to-lug makes the S434 compact for a 200m diver — most competitors in this category run 41–43mm. For wrists below 17cm where larger dive cases overhang uncomfortably, 39.5mm/46mm is one of the most wearable dive watch proportions available at this price.

The case has a fully brushed top and sides with a thin polished chamfer running down the lugs — a detail that adds visual refinement without being flashy. The lug tips are rounded rather than squared, which contributes to the comfortable wrist contact. No sharp edges or rough finishing on any contact surface.

Case thickness of 13.2mm includes the domed crystal — measured to the bezel the case is approximately 12mm. The dome adds visual character while keeping the under-crystal profile manageable.

Bezel

120-click unidirectional ceramic insert — the bezel rotates counterclockwise only, as expected on a dive watch. 120 clicks is finer than the more common 60-click bezels, allowing 3-degree increments. The action is light with minimal back play and the alignment is accurate. Ceramic markers are fully lumed with BGW9 — the entire bezel triangle and numerals glow in darkness.

Coin-edge grip on the bezel provides positive purchase. The ceramic insert holds its appearance far better than aluminium alternatives under normal daily handling.

Crystal

Domed sapphire with light AR coating. The dome adds genuine visual character — at certain angles it creates a slight barrel distortion that reads as vintage in the best sense. The AR coating reduces reflections without the blue-tint associated with heavier coatings. Scratch resistance is confirmed sapphire.

Display Caseback

Unusual for a diver — most 200m watches use solid casebacks for water resistance integrity. The S434 display back shows the NH35 rotor and movement. For buyers who prefer the traditional solid caseback, that option is also available. The display back functions correctly at 200m — the additional caseback crystal does not compromise the water resistance specification.

Movement

Seiko NH35A — the most globally serviced automatic movement available. Hacking, hand-winding, date at 3 o’clock, approximately 41-hour power reserve. Seiko’s rated accuracy is -10/+30 seconds per day. Individual examples vary — a well-regulated NH35A typically runs within ±5–10 seconds per day.

The S434’s crown unscrews and screws with a slightly gritty feel noted in hands-on testing — winding and time-setting actions are smooth once the crown is pulled to the appropriate position. This appears to be a characteristic of this specific model rather than a movement issue.

Dial

Flat dial with a subtle sunburst effect — the sunburst catches light at different angles without being visually noisy. Applied indices with BGW9 lume, white printed text (Seestern branding, water resistance rating, automatic), date window at 3 o’clock. All lume applications are consistent — no gaps or uneven fill visible.

Large Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9 with rectangular block indices at the remaining hours. The gold-tone variant uses sword-style hour hand, arrow-style minute hand and a lollipop seconds hand — the lollipop seconds hand is the dial’s most characterful detail, floating above the chapter ring.

BGW9 Lume

Applied to dial indices, hands and bezel markers — full coverage. BGW9 produces blue-white afterglow, consistent across all lume applications. The bezel lume and dial lume activate from the same light source and glow uniformly. Legibility in complete darkness is strong enough that the watch is genuinely useful rather than cosmetically lumed.

Bracelet

Oyster-style with brushed top links and polished flanks. Solid links with screw-pin construction — not press-fit hollow links. The female end links improve fit on smaller wrists, a detail that distinguishes the S434 from dive watches with generic end links. Bracelet adjusts via link removal with the included screwdriver.

Double-push deployment clasp with on-the-fly micro-adjustment — the micro-adjustment mechanism works but requires attention to operate smoothly. The clasp can feel stiff to close until it is broken in. These are honest minor inconveniences in an otherwise well-constructed bracelet.

S434 vs S435 — Which to Choose

The S435 is the higher-beat variant of the same watch — same case, same dimensions, different movement. The S435 uses a high-beat automatic (typically 28,800 vph) for a smoother seconds sweep.

Choose S434 if the NH35 serviceability and proven reliability matter more than seconds sweep character, or if price is a factor. Choose S435 if the higher-beat movement’s smoother visual is the priority.

Honest Assessment

What it does well: The 39.5mm/46mm proportions are genuinely compact for 200m. The ceramic bezel executes correctly with accurate alignment. The full BGW9 coverage including bezel markers is a thoughtful specification. The screw-pin oyster bracelet with female end links outperforms what the price suggests.

Minor issues: Crown feel on unscrewing. Bracelet clasp stiffness when new. Display caseback is unusual for a dive watch — not a flaw, but some buyers will prefer solid.

Value position: At the current price the S434 delivers confirmed sapphire, confirmed ceramic bezel, confirmed BGW9 full coverage, Seiko NH35A and 200m — a specification set that historically required spending significantly more.
