Pagani Design PD-1693 GMT Watch Review — 42mm, DG5833A, 200m, Independently Adjustable GMT

Jewelry Addicts Pagani Design PD-1693 Review: Affordable Vintage Rolex Explorer II Homage https://jwlraddicts.com/?p=81385

The Pagani Design PD-1693 is a 42mm automatic GMT watch with a Pearl DG5833A movement, independently adjustable GMT hand, cyclops sapphire crystal, engraved nautical caseback and 200m water resistance — at under $130. This review covers the confirmed specifications, what the watch actually does well, and where it sits relative to other GMT options in the range.

Dimensions and Wrist Fit

42mm case diameter, 14mm thickness, 49.7mm lug-to-lug, 20mm lug width. At 49.7mm the PD-1693 wears larger than the case diameter suggests — appropriate for wrists from approximately 17cm upward. Below that the lug overhang becomes noticeable. The 14mm thickness is moderate for an automatic GMT and sits comfortably under most shirt cuffs.

Weight is approximately 180g with the full stainless steel bracelet — this is a heavy watch. Buyers coming from lightweight field watches will feel the difference.

Dial

Black matte dial with faux patina cream-tone indices — the warm marker colour creates a vintage tool-watch aesthetic without trying to replicate any specific reference. The large triangle marker at 12 o’clock, rectangular hour markers and bold Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9 are consistent with classic expedition and GMT watch dial conventions.

The orange GMT hand is the dial’s defining accent — a single bold stroke of colour against the black and cream layout. “GMT” text in orange at the 9 o’clock position reinforces the function. The Pagani Design logo sits cleanly at 12 o’clock without crowding the dial.

Date window at 3 o’clock with a cyclops magnifier lens — the cyclops is confirmed genuine sapphire, not plastic. The magnification makes the date legible at a glance.

Crystal and Case

Sapphire crystal confirmed — the raised “top-hat” profile adds a slight domed visual to the crystal that reinforces the vintage character. Genuine sapphire is confirmed by scratch testing. The cyclops over the date is also sapphire.

Case construction: vertical brushing on the lugs, polished bevelled sides, brushed radial finish on the fixed 24-hour bezel. The bezel is neatly engraved with 24-hour markers — no gaps, no misaligned numerals. The fixed bezel construction means it cannot be rotated, but the independently adjustable GMT hand makes this irrelevant for setting a second time zone.

DG5833A Movement — The GMT That Matters

The Pearl DG5833A runs at 21,600 vph (3Hz), with hacking seconds and an independently adjustable GMT hand.

The independently adjustable GMT hand is the key specification. On a standard offset GMT, you set the main hour hand and the GMT hand moves with it — you cannot adjust the GMT hand independently without also changing the main time. The DG5833A allows the GMT hand to be set separately, meaning:

  • Set local time on the main hour and minute hands
  • Set a second time zone independently on the GMT hand via the crown
  • Travel to a new time zone — advance or retard the main hour hand in one-hour increments without disturbing the GMT hand or the running seconds

This is true dual-time functionality rather than a simple 24-hour indicator. At this price point, an independently adjustable GMT hand is a meaningful specification — the Seiko NH34 in the Cronos L6029 is the main alternative in the accessible GMT category with the same capability.

The screw-down crown is engraved with the Pagani Design logo. For first use or after the watch has stopped, wind manually by rotating the crown clockwise 20–30 turns until resistance is felt.

Bracelet and Clasp

Three-link brushed bracelet with solid end links — not hollow, which is a meaningful quality marker at this price. Link removal uses screws rather than spring pins, which means sizing requires a small screwdriver (included in the box) but results in a more secure fit.

The clasp includes micro-adjustment positions for fine wrist sizing. The diver-style push-release extension on the clasp is the weakest element of the bracelet — it functions correctly but feels less refined than the main bracelet construction. A standard deployment clasp without the diver extension would suit the watch’s non-dive character better.

Caseback

Rather than an exhibition caseback or a plain brushed solid back, the PD-1693 has an engraved nautical-themed caseback — a distinctive detail at this price point. The engraving includes water resistance information (200M = 660FT), model designation (PD-1693) and Pagani Design branding. The nautical theme connects to the GMT function’s original association with aviation and navigation.

Water Resistance

200m (20ATM) with screw-down crown. Appropriate for swimming, snorkelling and recreational diving. Avoid hot water and steam environments — thermal cycling stresses gasket seals regardless of depth rating.

Packaging

The PD-1693 ships in a quality box above Pagani Design’s standard presentation. Contents: watch, stainless steel bracelet, instruction manual, warranty card, small screwdriver for bracelet adjustment. The packaging reflects the watch’s positioning as a step above the brand’s entry-level range.

What It Does Well

Independently adjustable GMT hand at under $130. This is the defining value argument. True dual-time with independently adjustable GMT is available in the NH34-powered watches (Cronos, Seestern S456) but those watches are in the $170–$335 range. The DG5833A delivers the same functional capability at a lower price.

Cyclops sapphire. Not mineral glass with a plastic lens — confirmed sapphire crystal including the magnifier.

Solid end links and screw-pin bracelet. Both are quality indicators that more expensive watches use and budget watches routinely skip.

Engraved caseback. A detail that costs nothing to appreciate but most watches at this price don’t bother with.

What to Be Aware Of

DG5833A vs Seiko NH34. The Pearl DG5833A is a Chinese movement. The Seiko NH34 in the Cronos L6029 is a Japanese movement with a longer documented service history and more global servicing availability. Both provide independently adjustable GMT — the PD-1693 is cheaper; the Cronos is more easily serviced outside major cities.

49.7mm lug-to-lug. This is large. Buyers with wrists under 17cm should measure carefully before ordering.

180g weight. Substantial — check if this suits your daily wear preference.

Diver clasp extension. Functional but the weakest part of an otherwise solid bracelet.

Verdict

The Pagani Design PD-1693 delivers independently adjustable GMT, confirmed sapphire including cyclops, solid end links, screw-pin bracelet and 200m at under $130. The DG5833A is a Chinese movement at a price below Japanese-movement GMT alternatives. For buyers who specifically want dual-time functionality and are comfortable with a Chinese caliber, the PD-1693 is the most affordable confirmed independently-adjustable GMT at Jewelry Addicts.
