Product Description

Baltany S4092 Sector Dial Dress Watch — 38.5mm ST1701 / ST1700

The Baltany S4092 is a 38.5mm sector dial dress watch available in two movement configurations: the Seagull ST1700 manual-winding at 9.3mm total thickness, and the ST1701 automatic at 10.4mm. Its defining feature is the sector dial — a cross-line layout where a horizontal line and a vertical line divide the dial face into four quadrants, with baton hour markers and a sub-seconds register at 6 o’clock.

Available in three dial and case combinations — white dial with gold case, silver-white dial with steel case, and champagne gold dial with gold case — each on a leather strap. The fully polished 316L stainless steel case and domed sapphire crystal give the S4092 the visual character of a high-end vintage dress watch at a realistic price point.

Variants — Three Dial and Case Configurations

White dial / gold case / dark brown leather: A clean white dial with the sector cross-lines in a fine dark tone against the white background, gold-tone baton markers and polished gold-tone case. Paired with a dark brown leather strap. The white and gold combination is the most formally dressed of the three — highest contrast between dial and markers, warmest overall palette.

Silver-white dial / steel case / tan leather: A cooler silver-white dial in the steel-tone case. The sector lines are subtle against the near-white background; the polished steel case reflects cool light. Paired with a tan brown leather strap. The most versatile of the three configurations — works equally well in formal and smart-casual contexts.

Champagne gold dial / gold case / brown leather: A warm cream-gold dial — the most tonal of the three, where the champagne dial and gold case create a near-monochrome warm palette. The sector lines are barely visible in certain lighting; the effect is a very clean, very warm watch with minimal contrast. Paired with a brown leather strap. The most distinctive and collector-focused configuration.

The Sector Dial

The sector dial is one of the most recognisable dial layouts from early 20th-century watchmaking. Two perpendicular lines cross the dial face — a horizontal line approximately one-third up from 6 o’clock, and a vertical line from 12 to 6 — dividing the surface into four quadrants. This creates a visual grid that gives the dial a strong geometric structure without adding complications, text or additional markers.

The design has roots in scientific and navigational instruments of the 1920s and 1930s, where the cross-line layout helped readers track the position of hands relative to specific reference points. On a wristwatch the functional justification became less relevant as case sizes shrank, but the aesthetic — mathematical, structured, precise — retained a strong following among watch designers and collectors who value geometric clarity over decoration.

On the S4092 the sector lines are printed fine and clean against each dial background, the baton hour markers sit at the 12 cardinal positions and at additional intervals, and the sub-seconds register at 6 o’clock sits within the lower quadrant without interrupting the overall symmetry. The polished hands — long, tapered batons — cross the sector lines as they sweep around the dial, creating a layered depth effect that flat-printed dials cannot replicate.

Ultra-Slim Profile — 9.3mm Manual, 10.4mm Automatic

The 9.3mm total case height of the manual-winding version is the defining practical specification of the S4092. At 9.3mm the watch clears even the tightest shirt cuffs without catching fabric, and lies so close to the wrist that it is essentially imperceptible during all-day wear. The sensation of wearing a watch this slim is markedly different from the 12–13mm thick cases common on most automatics.

The 1.1mm difference between the manual (9.3mm) and automatic (10.4mm) versions is the direct result of removing the automatic rotor assembly. The rotor is the heaviest and thickest component of a self-winding movement — without it, the movement height drops and the case can be correspondingly thinner.

At 10.4mm the automatic version is still notably slim for a mechanical watch in this case diameter. Most NH35-based watches at 38mm+ measure 12–13mm; the Seagull ST1701’s thinner architecture allows the S4092 to achieve a profile that those movements cannot.

Movement — Manual vs Automatic

ST1700 manual-winding — the purist choice. Requires winding via the crown daily or every two to three days. The daily winding interaction is considered by many dress watch collectors to be part of the ownership experience — a conscious, tactile engagement with the watch mechanism. At 9.3mm it is the correct choice if slimness is a priority above convenience.

ST1701 automatic — the practical daily wear choice. Self-winds through wrist motion; hand-winding via the crown is also supported. At 10.4mm it is still impressively slim but gives up 1.1mm to the manual version.

Both movements include the sub-seconds complication — a small seconds hand at 6 o’clock driven off a separate gear train, which preserves the sector dial symmetry by eliminating a central seconds hand from the main axis.

Case & Crystal

The fully polished 316L stainless steel case is the correct finish for a sector dial dress watch — the high-mirror polish on all surfaces creates a case that reflects ambient light uniformly and reads as jewellery as much as instrument. The polished finish is consistent across both the steel and gold-tone (IP) case variants.

The domed sapphire crystal adds a slight convex curve over the dial surface. The dome creates a subtle visual magnification of the dial centre and produces the characteristic reflection ring visible around the bezel edge when viewed at an angle — a detail strongly associated with vintage dress watches. The AR coating on the underside reduces direct-light glare while preserving the dome’s visual character.

How the S4092 Compares to Merkur Sector Watches

Merkur is the most widely searched brand for sector dial watches at this price level, and the S4092 competes directly with their cross-line offerings. The S4092 matches or exceeds the Merkur on several practical specifications: the Seagull ST17 series movement is similarly slim to the movements Merkur uses; the domed sapphire is standard on both; polished 316L steel cases are comparable. The S4092’s manual-winding option at 9.3mm is a specific advantage for buyers who prioritise the slimmest possible profile. Both are valid choices in the sector dial category — compare the specific dial colour and case finish options to determine which suits your preference.

Who Is the Baltany S4092 For?

The S4092 is built for:

  • Buyers who specifically want a sector dial watch — the cross-line layout is the primary purchase reason for this watch
  • Anyone who wants an ultra-slim dress watch under 10mm for formal wear and cuff compatibility
  • Those who prefer manual-winding as a deliberate engagement with the watch mechanism
  • Collectors who want a geometric, minimalist dial without Arabic numerals or applied markers

For a sector dial alternative from the dedicated sector watch category, comparing directly with Merkur’s current offerings is worthwhile — both the S4092 and Merkur cross-line watches serve the same specific buyer.

For a slim automatic dress watch with sub-seconds and a cushion case instead of a round, the Baltany S4036 uses the same ST1701 movement with cathedral hands and a different case character.

For a slim automatic with a salmon or black dial and the manual-winding option, the Baltany S4101 uses the same ST17-series movements with a different dial layout.

How It Compares to Other Baltany Models

vs. Baltany S4036 — The S4036 uses ST1701 in a cushion case with cathedral hands and MOP dial options. The S4092 is the round case, sector dial alternative — same movement family, very different aesthetic.

vs. Baltany S4101 — The S4101 uses the same ST17 movements with a larger 38.5mm round case, applied 3D markers and a more ornamented dial. The S4092 is the more minimal and geometric option.

vs. Seestern S382 Ultrathin — The Seestern S382 prioritises slimness above all other considerations. The S4092 manual at 9.3mm is competitive on thickness and adds the sector dial as a strong aesthetic differentiator.

vs. Baltany S4090 Pie-Pan — The S4090 uses a Miyota 9039 high-beat movement with a 12-faceted dial in a 38.5mm case. The S4092 is the thinner, manual-available option; the S4090 has the movement quality advantage.
