The vintage dive watch aesthetic has never been about size — the most collected dive references of the 1960s and 1970s ran at 38–40mm, sat at 9–11mm thick, and wore with a quiet, purposeful presence that modern oversized divers cannot replicate. The Watchdives WD1980 V3 is built to those proportions: a 39mm case at 9.6mm slim, an aluminium unidirectional 120-click bezel in the classic matte finish, a matte black dial with oversized BGW9 lume markers and a clean syringe handset, sapphire crystal with high-clarity AR coating, a choice of VH31 sweep seconds quartz (no date) or Swiss Ronda 517 (day-date), available in 316L stainless steel or black PVD coating. Worn on a black nylon strap, the WD1980 V3 is a compact, lightweight, daily-rotation diver that earns its place alongside automatics three times its price by getting every proportion and detail correct.

Japan VH31 Sweep Seconds (no date) — Seiko’s higher-frequency quartz produces a smooth sweeping seconds hand rather than a one-second tick. Correct visual behaviour for a vintage dive watch dial. Clean symmetrical no-date layout. Multi-year battery, quartz accuracy, Japanese reliability. The choice for buyers who want the closest approximation to automatic sweep character without the movement cost or weight.
Swiss Ronda 517 Day-Date — A Swiss-manufactured quartz movement adding both day-of-week and date display to the dial. Ronda is a respected Swiss movement producer whose calibers serve the Swiss watch industry at multiple price tiers. The 517 brings Swiss movement provenance and practical daily calendar functionality. The choice for buyers who want a Swiss movement and the convenience of day-date display.

The WD1980 V3 uses an aluminium bezel insert rather than ceramic. This is a deliberate vintage reference choice — original professional dive watches of the 1960s and 1970s universally used aluminium bezel inserts. Aluminium bezels are lighter than ceramic, produce the matte surface character that ceramic cannot replicate, and age with a patina that collectors find desirable. The 120-click mechanism underneath provides precise, positive one-way rotation in 3-degree increments for accurate elapsed dive time tracking. For buyers who have specifically sought a vintage-authentic dive watch with an aluminium bezel rather than the ceramic inserts that dominate the modern microbrand market, the WD1980 V3 is one of the few compact quartz divers at this price that makes this choice correctly.
The WD1980 V3’s 9.6mm case thickness — measured including the sapphire crystal — is exceptional for a dive watch with 100M water resistance, a screw-down crown, and a screwback caseback. Most comparable dive watches run 12–14mm thick. At 9.6mm the WD1980 V3 sits essentially flat on the wrist, creates no lump under a shirt cuff, and wears with the unobtrusive comfort that makes a daily rotation watch genuinely wearable rather than worn for occasions. The slim profile also means the 39mm diameter does not feel disproportionately thick — the watch reads as compact and refined rather than like a shrunken large watch.
316L Stainless Steel — the classic dive watch case finish. Brushed and polished surfaces create visual contrast and reflect the tool-watch heritage of the design. Ages gracefully, serviceable for decades, most versatile against different strap and dial configurations.
Black PVD Coating — a physical vapour deposition process that deposits a thin, hard black layer over the stainless steel case. The result is a stealth all-black watch where case, bezel, and dial create a unified dark surface. PVD coating adds surface hardness above stainless steel but can show wear at contact points over years of daily use. The choice for buyers who want maximum visual impact and the most contemporary, tactical dive watch appearance.
The WD1980 V3 applies BGW9 blue Super-LumiNova across hands, hour markers, and bezel markers — not just the dial. In darkness the full bezel scale glows blue alongside the dial, providing elapsed dive time readability beyond the 12 o’clock pip reference. The oversized hour marker footprint on the matte black dial maximises the lume surface area relative to dial size, delivering more sustained brightness per marker than smaller indices would allow. The syringe handset carries enough lume volume that the hands remain clearly visible even as the charge fades — the hand profile ensures legibility persists longer than thin or narrow handsets would.
JwlrAddicts stocks two Watchdives models with distinct identities. The WD1863 is a vintage chronograph — three-subdial layout, tachymetre bezel, bubble sapphire, VK63 meca-quartz, multiple dial colour options. The WD1980 V3 is a vintage diver — clean two-hand or day-date layout, 120-click dive bezel, slim 9.6mm profile, BGW9 lume. Choose the WD1863 for chronograph function and dial colour variety; choose the WD1980 V3 for the purist compact dive watch with correct vintage proportions and slim daily wearability.
For automatic diver alternatives at comparable price points, the Phylida SE-11 Diver at 200M and the SteelDive SD1954 Water Ghost at 300M offer NH35-powered options with ceramic bezels at higher water resistance ratings.
What is the difference between the VH31 and Ronda 517 versions? The VH31 is a Japanese sweep seconds quartz with no date — smooth seconds sweep, symmetrical clean dial. The Ronda 517 is a Swiss-made quartz with day-date display — standard seconds, day and date window, Swiss movement provenance. Choose based on whether you want sweep seconds or Swiss movement with calendar function.
Why aluminium bezel rather than ceramic? Aluminium is the historically correct material for vintage dive watch bezels and produces the matte surface character that ceramic cannot replicate. It is lighter than ceramic and ages with the patina that vintage dive watch collectors specifically seek. The WD1980 V3’s design language is vintage-first — aluminium is the correct choice for this aesthetic.
Is the crystal sapphire? Yes — sapphire with high-clarity AR coating. Mohs 9 scratch resistance.
How does the 9.6mm thickness compare to other divers? Very slim — most 100M dive watches run 12–14mm thick. The WD1980 V3’s 9.6mm profile is exceptional and contributes significantly to the comfortable, low-profile daily wearing experience.
Can I swim with it? Yes — 100M / 10 BAR with screw-down crown and caseback is rated for swimming and active water sports.
Can I change the strap? Yes — 20mm lug width is standard. Any 20mm NATO, rubber, leather, or aftermarket strap fits without modification.

This watch is honestly incredible. it has the same quartz movement as the watch it is homaging, sapphire crystal, and stainless steel construction. all of this for less than 100 usd. shipping was very fast, and the watch arrived in a nice box. if you’re thinking about buying, i’d highly recommend.
Timely shipping with consistent updates of status. Great watch for the price. Love the vh31 mech-quartz.
Very nice
Wonderful watch
Great value and very nice item. A very decent cwc alternative Fyi the movement in the cwc is exactly the same
Everything is perfect
The watch is worth the money. They could have made the dial darker, the sapphire lighter, and so on. The second hand doesn't hit the markers. I'll add more details later.
The watch is perfect. Carefully well-made, excellent lumens, the nato strap also has its hardware in a dark finish. Excellent communication with the seller, very attentive and resolved all my doubts. I recommend buying here in this store. Thank you very much.
It arrived. It's a cool watch.
Watch for wrists 16/16.5mm. On 17cm it already feels small. Workmanship 10/10. Really does the job.
Buy this watch. I have many and this is all i want to wear. Very comfortable strap. Lume is insane. Very happy.
Beautiful watch
good watch, nice and light.
