1000 metres / 100 ATM is professional saturation diving specification — well beyond recreational scuba diving depths. For context:
At 1000m the SD1949S is overbuilt for any recreational diving use — the rating provides engineering margin that ensures the watch remains sealed under sustained recreational diving pressure many times over. For daily wear and recreational diving, 1000m water resistance is engineering confidence rather than a specification you will actually approach.
The 1000m rating is achieved through: screw-down crown, screw-in caseback (not exhibition), flat sapphire crystal (domed crystals flex under deep pressure), heavy case construction and the bronze alloy’s corrosion resistance in salt water environments.
The same CUSN8 marine-grade bronze alloy as the Heimdallr 6105 Bronze — approximately 92% copper and 8% tin. The case develops a natural patina over time through contact with air, moisture and skin. No two bronze watches age identically. See the Heimdallr 6105 page for a full explanation of bronze patina development, maintenance and reversal.
At 155g without strap the SD1949S is a heavy watch — significantly heavier than an equivalent stainless steel watch at the same size. Bronze is denser than steel. On the wrist the weight is distributed across the 54.3mm lug-to-lug span but buyers accustomed to 80–100g watches will notice the difference.
The SD1949S uses both Super-LumiNova C3 and BGW9 on different dial elements:
Super-LumiNova C3: Produces a bright green afterglow in darkness — the most commonly used lume in modern dive watches. Charges quickly under visible light. C3 is typically applied to hour markers and hands where maximum brightness is the priority.
Super-LumiNova BGW9: Produces a blue-white afterglow — slightly dimmer than C3 but with a different colour temperature that many collectors prefer for its vintage character. BGW9 is associated with military and vintage watch dial design. On the SD1949S, BGW9 is typically applied to the bezel pip or specific dial elements to create a dual-tone lume character.
The combination of C3 and BGW9 on the same dial creates a distinctive underwater lighting effect — the two colours glow at different intensities and tones, allowing the wearer to distinguish between different dial elements in total darkness.
The bezel advances in 120 individual click positions — 3 degrees per click, creating very precise elapsed-time markings at 30-second intervals. Most dive bezels use 60 or 120 clicks; 120 gives finer granularity for timing short intervals. Unidirectional rotation — the bezel can only advance counterclockwise — ensures accidental bumps always result in an overestimate of elapsed time (safety-conservative for diving decompression stop timing).
The SD1949S’s square case creates a distinct visual identity among dive watches — most divers are round. The square profile references early military and commercial dive watches from the 1960s–70s where square cases were common. The angular case edges create more pronounced shadow contrasts than a round case, making the watch immediately identifiable on the wrist.
The 16.2mm thickness is substantial — necessary for the 1000m sealing architecture. At 45mm × 54.3mm lug-to-lug this is a wrist-filling watch appropriate for larger wrists (18cm and above).
The date window is positioned at 4:30 rather than the standard 3 o’clock — a placement that avoids interrupting the hour marker positions at 3 and 4, preserving the dial symmetry. The 4:30 date placement is associated with vintage tool watches and creates a more balanced dial layout than a standard 3 o’clock date.
The SD1949S is built for:
vs. Heimdallr 6105 Bronze — The Heimdallr is 45mm round at 200m, leather strap. The SD1949S is 45mm square at 1000m, rubber strap. Both CuSn8 bronze NH35 dive watches — choose Heimdallr for the cushion round case and leather; choose SD1949S for the square case and extreme water resistance.
vs. San Martin SN007G V4 Diver — The San Martin is NH35 at 41mm/200m in stainless steel. The SD1949S is NH35 at 45mm/1000m in bronze square case. Choose San Martin for the conventional round diver at moderate proportions; choose SD1949S for the square bronze tool watch.
vs. Boderry Admiral GMT Titanium — The Boderry is a titanium GMT diver. The SD1949S is a bronze square dedicated diver. Different materials and complications.
